The Trenches
A Field Guide for Those Who Shape the Lives of Others
Isiah Anderson
Sometimes people don't need another expert. They need someone willing to step into the trench with them.
No account. No email required. Just read.

A message from Isiah
Before you read, let me tell you why I wrote it.

The Trenches didn't begin as a book. It grew out of decades spent in gyms, classrooms, homes, counseling conversations, hospital rooms, difficult moments, victories, failures, faith, family and relationships.
Before you read it, I want to tell you why I'm giving it away.
Why I'm giving the book away
Some things are more important than selling books.
I wrote The Trenches for people who spend their lives shaping other people.
Coaches. Teachers. Counselors. Pastors. Parents. Mentors. Leaders.
The people answering the phone when somebody is struggling.
- The coach staying after practice.
- The teacher who sees what everybody else missed.
- The mentor who keeps showing up.
- The parent wondering if they're getting it right.
- The counselor sitting with someone on their worst day.
If this book can help one of those people become a safer, stronger, wiser and more present person for someone who needs them, I want them to have it.
That's why The Trenches is available here to read for free.
The cover
My Brother's Keeper
The artwork on the front of The Trenches began as a pencil sketch by Ivann C. Anderson. Before there was a book cover, there was a drawing of a battle-worn warrior holding a child's hand — one carrying the sword, the other carrying a staff, both walking the same rocky path.

Am I my brother's keeper?
It is one of the oldest questions in Scripture, and it is still the question every coach, teacher, parent, counselor, pastor and mentor answers with their life. The warrior is scarred. He is tired. He keeps walking anyway — and he does not walk alone.
That is the whole book in one image: the armor is real, the road is hard, and somebody smaller is watching how you carry it.
People become best in safe relationships.
Safe does not mean easy.
Safe does not mean an absence of accountability. Safe does not mean lowering standards.
It means creating relationships where grace and truth can exist together.
- Known
- Challenged
- Corrected
- Forgiven
- Encouraged
- Loved

Behavior is visible. The heart is not.
Who this is for
If you shape people, this is for you.
You don't need an impressive title to influence someone's life. If someone is becoming because of your presence, you're already standing in a trench.
Share the Trenches
Know someone in the trenches?
Send them the book. A coach. A teacher. A parent. A counselor. A pastor. A mentor. A friend. Sometimes the person helping everyone else needs someone pouring into them too.
Optional
Stay in the trenches.
Occasional reflections, new resources, leadership tools and conversations for people who shape the lives of others.
Who has God entrusted to you?
They don't need you to have all the answers. They need someone willing to step into the trench with them.
